What is humanWATCHING all about?
A culmination of 15 years of people watching and the study of mankind, the exhibition summarises Jeganathan’s findings in 14 portraits – seven males and seven females representing the people born on the seven days of the week.
“Everything is based on certain behavioural patterns, on certain happenings,” he says.
While numerology, astrology and face reading have been around for a long time, Jeganathan’s study is loosely based on the days that people are born.
"Each painting draws you in as each weaves intricate stories individually and as a part of the whole collection."
Jeganathan’s works focus on the general characteristics and physical attributes as well as the compatibility of partners after a consensus is made based on the day of the week in which they are born.
The size of the canvas also denotes the inherent characteristics of males and females.
“Females are very complex creatures – it is so difficult to understand a female whereas it’s easy to figure men out,” says Jeganathan.
Drawing females on the larger sized canvases, Jeganathan ekes out the traits that women tend to keep secret.
For the males, he has compacted their qualities into a whole portrait of male faces.
Looking at the paintings, you would notice that certain themes come up in several days and men and women born on the same days need not necessarily have the same traits.
Each painting draws you in as each weaves intricate stories individually and as a part of the whole collection.
As part of his research, Jeganathan has also made a video comprising thousands of photographic portraits he has collected of famous and anonymous people, arranged according to the days of the week they were born.
The video also serves as a motivational piece of art – for people to see what famous people born on “their day” have achieved.
