About the Artist

"Jeganathan Ramachandram, an established name in the art industry in Malaysia has been an active participant in the local art scene for more than a decade. His intuitive ingenuity and free spirited nature is the very foundation that has allowed him to produce great art works. His paintings are characterized by sublime images that seek to express the deep rooted impressions of the super conscious mind. Hence, every painting of his has a story to tell."

Dasavatharam

"An epic 1.8 by 4.6m masterpiece, done much in a lively cubist style, tells of the 10 incarnations of Vishnu, often performed as the first song of Odissi."

This painting is based on the idea of Dasavatharam (the ten reincarnations of Vishnu). Based on a research for the past 14 years, I saw its relation to the conception of a child. In a work titled “Aku” done a few years ago, I had painted the nine months of conception but treated it only as a background decoration.

When this exhibition came by, the idea came up again and since Dasavatharam is a popular theme in Odissi dance, it gave me a chance to explore the theme with more details and narrative expressions.

I took the mudras (hand gestures), ornaments and dance postures to represent chosen characters and dramatised them using my symbols. What started as an idea has now taken a space of 6 feet x 15 feet.
